Ballyclogh House is a character country property set in a peaceful rural position a short distance from Fermoy. This historic house has a colourful past and was originally a substantial Gothic mansion of seven bays, the earliest parts of which were believed to date from the early 17th century. By the 19th century it boasted some forty rooms and was described by Lewis in his Topographical Dictionary of Ireland of 1837 as ‘a handsome mansion in the Elizabethan style’. Of the original, only the northern section now remains, which includes the impressive Tudor style staircase and ballroom – the remainder having been demolished in the 1928 by the Land Commission.
A further footnote in history was the birth here in 1813 of barrister Sir Redmond Barry who emigrated to Australia in 1839. He is renowned as the judge who passed sentence on, the most famous of all Australian bush-rangers, Ned Kelly to hang in 1880. In an ironic twist, his own death occurred just 12 days later, from a sudden neck infection which was regarded by many as divine intervention.
The remaining portion of the creeper-clad house was restored some 25 years ago and updated and extended in recent years.
